The most common way to heat/cool a home is the forced air system. Whenever we talk about a furnace, air handler, central air conditioner, hydro air system, or rooftop system, we are talking about a forced air system. While they all have different ways of heating or cooling, they all utilize a central ducting system to move the air. The efficiency and comfort you would enjoy with a forced air system heavily rely on the quality of the ducting system. From load calculation and equipment selection to ducting design and register selection, every detail affects the quality of your forced air system. Unfortunately, many existing systems are not properly sized, sealed, insulated, or laid out to deliver proper airflow; therefore, the quality of your ducting must be considered when replacing your equipment. If there are problems that can be fixed, it is always recommended that you fix them when replacing your equipment so that your new system delivers optimal performance.

A forced water system utilizes a boiler with either a gas or oil burner to heat water. Then the circulator pump moves the heated water through the baseboard registers, radiant heating loops, hydro air system, or some combination of the three to provide heating for your home or business. While these systems are not commonly installed in new construction homes any longer due to large up-front costs, long completion times, and the ease with which central air conditioning systems pair with forced air heating systems, they are still, however, very common in existing homes built over the last 50 years throughout New England. The large cost of converting from forced water to forced air leads many to keep forced water systems in place even when it’s time to replace the boiler. Additionally, many high-end homes and estates choose these systems because the benefits and flexibility outweigh the costs when combined with hydro-air.

Like a forced water system, a steam system uses a boiler to heat water; however, instead of heating the water to 180-200 degrees with a typical water boiler, the steam heating system uses a steam boiler to boil the water at 212 degrees. The hot steam that rises as the water burns off is used to provide heat through steam piping and in-room registers for your living spaces. While being virtually non-existent in new construction homes, you will find these systems in older homes. Since steam conversion can be both costly and timely, most people continue to use the building’s existing piping while just replacing their boilers. Very few HVAC contractors even work on steam heating systems, and the ones who do work on them aren’t as familiar with them, so many of the systems are missing critical components needed for efficient operation. Many engineers need to heat/cool large areas but within limited budgets and operational space, so rooftop systems can be the perfect solution. A rooftop system delivers conditioned air via a central ducting system. Often this is accomplished through a gas/electric packaged unit with either side or bottom mounted duct connections that tie directly into the building’s central ducting system. Most add an economizer for more efficiency as well. In large applications you will often see dozens of rooftop units (RTU’s) on a single roof. Each system is connected to its own central ducting system that handles heating and cooling for a specific space of the building. These units are very heavy, so we need a crane to hoist them up or take old ones down.

Ductless mini-splits are really efficient and operate at a temperature as low as 15 degrees below zero. The indoor units come in several varieties for your floor, wall, and ceiling — which makes them perfect for tough retrofits. Central systems are efficient, but their operation caps out in temperatures of 25-30 degrees, so you will need a secondary heating source such as an electric heating element, gas furnace, or hot water coil (hydro-air). With both systems, it is critical to properly size the equipment and refrigeration piping, match the models, and install them exactly to manufacturer specifications to avoid stressful callbacks.
